De-worm is a single-dose worm treatment containing the active ingredient mebendazole, which can be used by the whole family. One tablet per person for those aged two years or older will eliminate intestinal pinworm / threadworm.
The active ingredient in De-worm is mebendazole. This is an anthelmintic agent, which means it is designed to destroy parasitic intestinal worms. It works by inhibiting worms’ ability to absorb sugars. It does this by interfering with the proteins in either the worm’s intestine or its absorptive cells, therefore starving it of the energy necessary to survive.
De-worm orange flavoured tablets containing of 100mg of mebendazole are available in a pack of 6 or 24 tablets. Each tablet treats one person.
Remember that De-worm will only treat the adult worms currently residing in the intestines. They will not treat any pre-existing eggs or immature worms. This is why it is important to treat the whole family at the same time and to check roughly two weeks after the initial dose in case a second dose of treatment is required. Existing threadworm eggs in your environment can cause a reinfection and treatment will not prevent your children from contracting threadworm again if they ingest more eggs. If threadworm reinfection occurs after two weeks, then repeat the treatment. Read the information available on this website to see how best to prevent a reinfestation of threadworm in your home.
Cautions: De-worm should not be taken by children under two years of age and it should not be taken during pregnancy. If you are unsure about either of these restrictions then you should consult with a health professional. You should not take De-worm if you are allergic to, or have a hypersensitivity to, any of its ingredients. Caution is also suggested if you suffer from acute liver disease or are taking the anti-ulcer medication Cimetidine. In either of these cases, long-term treatment with mebendazole can lead to an excessive plasma concentration in the blood when the liver does not breakdown the mebendazole sufficiently. Caution should also be taken if you using the anticonvulsant Carbamazepine.
Ingredients: The active ingredient in De-worm is mebendazole. The tablets are sugar and preservative free.
Using De-worm for Threadworms
Side effects: In rare cases involving very heavy threadworm infestations a treatment can produce transient symptoms including diarrhoea and abdominal pain. Other possible side effects are rare because mebendazole is poorly absorbed by the intestine but may include a loss of appetite, vomiting, drowsiness, headache or dizziness.
Dosage: The tablet is taken orally. One orange-flavoured de-worm tablet is all that is required to treat an adult or children, aged 2 to 12 years. This dosage is irrespective of their age, weight or size. The tablets are chewable. Some children may find it easier to take the tablet if you crush it up or mix it with food or drink.
